Cutie Honey (1973) - Episode 15

This is the only episode I was planning on subtitling (apart from the first four episodes, which I subtitled from laserdisc back in the day). But there is a chance I may be able to do more of them, stay tuned...

Sukeban Deka II (1985) - Episode 02

Yoko goes on her first mission as the new Asamiya Saki. This episode also features the first appearance of Yajima Yukino and ends with a brief appearance by recurring villain Kage no Soto.

In my opinion, Accius did a great job translating Saki's poetic little speech that she gives to villains. His translation makes me think of Anthony Burgess' version of Cyrano de Bergerac.

Shinzou Ningen Casshan (1973) - Episode 03

Casshan has an encounter with his old friend Luna and her father Professor Kozuki, but he can't bear to let them know what has happened to him.

Braiking Boss can be seen smoking a cigar in this episode. You'd think an android wouldn't be able to get pleasure from tobacco, but I suppose he is batshit crazy after all.

Dororon Enma-kun (1973) - Episode 02

I was originally planning on only subtitling the first episode of this show (as a special treat for Halloween 2010), but I've decided to do more episodes based on the great responses I received in the comments section.

The torrent is here. NEW direct download link is here:

Watch Dororon Enma-kun (1973) #2 (English subtitled) in AnimeOne thing I really enjoy about early 1970s Toei anime is the amazing color palette used in those shows. Rich, gorgeous background paintings and jaw-dropping color styling. You can see that they were really giving people with newly purchased color television sets something to show off the new hardware with.

Another really good example of this detailed color styling from that era is Shotaro Ishinomori's series Genshi Shonen Ryu. This show is currently being subtitled by the manly folks at Hokuto no Gun. If you haven't seen this show yet, I highly recommend that you head over to their site here and check it out (not to mention the other great series they've subtitled like Kinnikuman and Sakigake!! Otokojuku). There's also a great Genshi Shonen Ryu site called "Spear of Ryu", check it out here:

Vifam OVA: "The 12 People Who Vanished" (1985)

The 1980s was before the era when it became common for entire television series to be released on home video. During that time, Nippon Sunrise had a common practice where some time after one of their shows concluded, they would release a short series of recap/digest videos. Assuming those videos sold well enough, they would then release one or more OVAs featuring new animation.

Such was the case with Vifam, where the two "Variety of Vifam" recap videos were followed by two all new stories. This is the first of those two, it is a standalone story set during the main series. The second video is an epilogue that takes place after the final episode, I may get around to subtitling that eventually.

This release is dedicated to Tim Eldred and Steve Harrison. In the mid 1980s when I was an newbie to anime fandom, these two were always very generous about sharing their extensive knowledge of anime with those just getting into the hobby. It was Tim who first showed me this very OVA (which he owned on Japanese pre-recorded VHS), and without their enthusiatic help in those days I would probably not be a fan subtitler today.

Also big thanks go out to the staff of Anime-Classic for subtitling the entire 46 episode Vifam TV series. You can check out there site here, and their anime torrents can be found here.

One additional bit of trivia...this is actually the very first project I completed back when I was doing analogue LD->S-VHS subtitling in the 1990s. I also subtitled the first four episodes of the TV series, but I never got any further than that. It's taken me a while to get a digital version of this OVA completed just because I needed to space out the time between working on it and doing quality checks so that I didn't get tired of watching it over and over. Despite how many times I've seen it over the years, I still find this a charming little story.

Cyborg 009 (1968) - Episode 08

This is one of my favorite Cyborg 009 episodes. The dramatic themes of betrayal, sacrifice and redemption remind me of why I love old school anime so much, and this series in particular.

Shinzou Ningen Casshan (1973) - Episode 02

Another powerful Casshan episode. I'm enjoying finally getting to see these translated as much as you are. Thanks to all of the people who leave me such nice comments...I really enjoy reading them and it really does make a big difference when I'm deciding which episode to work on next.

Shinzou Ningen Casshan (1973) - Episode 01

Out of the four superhero shows Tatsuo Yoshida created in the 1970s, Casshan was definitely the most brutal. Character Designs by Tatsuo Yoshida & Yoshitaka Amano. Storyboards by Yoshiyuki Tomino.

This is one of those shows that I've wanted to see subtitled for years, but finally decided to do it myself. To paraphrase the opening narration: "If Nanto won't subtitle it, who will?" Big thanks go out to elgrillo for his help in getting this project off the ground.

Michelle & Kevin have several production cells from this show on their website here, plus they have tons of cells from other great anime as well.
