Ever since I started releasing classic anime with English subtitles, I've gotten a lot of requests for me to release the scripts (or softsubs) so that people could make their own versions of my subtitles localized to their own language. While I have no plans to release my scripts for people to re-purpose however they please, I have been considering the possibility of releasing hardsubbed versions of my videos in other languages.
What I'm not looking for is someone who will dump my scripts into Google Translate. If you are interested in taking a joining my group as a translator, you must be truly bilingual: able to read English and another language fluently. Ideally this would mean that you either grew up in a bilingual household, or that you have at least two years of college level English. I will be sharing scripts with you one at a time via e-mail, and you must promise not to share my scripts elsewhere or post them to the internet.
If you want to apply for one of these positions, leave me a message in the comments section telling me what languages you speak, what shows you would be interested in working on and your e-mail address. This message should be written by you in fluent English, not Google translate. Bonus points if you also tell me something about yourself, how you became interested in anime, what types of shows you like, etc.
EDIT: Thanks for all of the great responses so far. I've contacted a bunch of people who left comments but I haven't had time to contact everyone yet. At some point in the next few weeks everyone who volunteered will get an e-mail from me. And I'll keep checking the comments for more responses.

DeleteIn case you're curious, I got into anime when I was about 18 years old. A friend of mine introduced me to anime back in 1994, and I have been hooked on it since. (I had seen it earlier on TV and didn't know it... shows like Voltron, Battle of the Planets, etc.) As you can tell, super robot anime is something I'm interested in. :P

ReplyDeleteI'm Italian and I'm interested in translating the B\W episodes of the show "Mahou Tsukai Sally" (The colour episodes were broadcast in Italy so italian translations are available for those episodes though they would need a better adaptation).
I learnt english at high school and then took the P.E.T. test at the Politecnico di Torino in 1999
so I didn't need to attend that course neither take the full exam to graduate as Engineer at the time. While attending high school I was a Loreena McKennit fan and in 1993 I translated all the W. B. Yeats and Alfred Tennyson lyrics she sung.
I dealt with technical specifications in english for job purposes between 2000 and 2006.
Last year I became keen on fansub: I translated (from english) the second season of the show "Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei", it wasn't released yet cause we're doing the timing.
(I don't know if you heard about this show, but it's so full of japanese puns, written in boards, and it uses even ancient japanese, so that's hold difficult by japanese people too)
We (me and a friend whom I'm team up with) will release it at http://zetsubou.altervista.org/blog/ , our blog is mostly about new animations except for Urusei Yatsura (Lamù in Italy).

That's such a great idea! I know english language enough to understand immediately the subtitles [and I read a lot of them, because for 10 years I'm watching movies in English (and I'm following a lot of American directors)]. I understand a little Japanese. I have the animemanite since I was born and I never recovered. Rather, my condition has worsened to the point that my current project is to watch every anime ever made in chronological order. ReplyDeleteI think there are already groups around the world doing what you're thinking about with raws.
No, I don't anticipate this project affecting the speed of my releases. Most of the work will be done by other people, apart from the encodes (which are done in a batch process that runs while I'm asleep.)
DeleteThere are a number of things that can slow down my releases, such as lack of money for translations, periods where my work schedule is particularly busy, relatives visiting from out of town, etc. Even something as mundane as new episodes being aired of my favorite TV shows can have a minor impact. But I don't see this particular project having any noticeable effect.
And obviously I'm aware that other people re-purpose my subtitles without asking permission, which actually makes me very upset. That's one of the major reasons that I don't release softsubs or raws, since that would make it much easier for people to do this.
I was'nt suggesting that You release your raws, I mean't that other translators can get their own raws and do their own translations for the people who request that you do other languages.

The raws aren't the real issue here, it's my scripts. I spend a lot of money getting things translated, and I put a lot of time into getting my scripts just the way I want them. So I really don't like people re-using my scripts without asking permission. I'd rather be able to choose the translators that are adapting them into other languages. That way I can make sure that the adaptations are done by people fluent in both languages, rather than someone that I don't know just dumping the script into Google translate.
DeleteIf you released mkv with softsub (or raw+ass), it would be great for people like me who are learning to speak Japanese (so can turn on subs when not sure about something) + it would improve quality.
DeleteAs for people steeling your work it will happen regardless to weather you release softsubs or not as these people who make bootlegs will just sale you hardsub versions. So really your just punishing the people who have legitimate reasons for softsub.
As for encoders/release groups who may use your subs all the ones I know + the main ones give credit to the fansubbers. By making it softsub all your be doing is spreading the joy of all these great animes (which is why you made this site in the first place).
I'm very interested in working with the spanish translations since I'm a native speaker and a very good english speaker and a great advantage is that I'm very good at grammar meaning that I can make quality translations. In addition I have a basic knowledge in japanese so I can make more accurate translations based on some of the words I listen.
ReplyDeleteAbout anime I'm a long time fan since 1992 but I grew up watching all kinds of anime series on TV (but I wasn't aware it was anime) I watch any kind of series from the older ones to the latest, Now I'm trying to collect every magical girl series I find and WMT series. More things I have online are in Metacafe (user:SourcererZ) YouTube (user:SourcererZZ) and in myanimelist.com (user:sourcererz).
@Nanto- Yes Don't release Raws or Scripts, Just keep at the english hardsubs and let other groups get their own resources. :)

ReplyDeletePlus, I've been watching anime for decades and I literally grew up with 70's super robots and such, and I took a couple of years of a basic Japanese course some years ago for sport, which could maybe allow me to spot some imperfections in the English translations (BTW, I have some perplexities about the Jeeg subs, which I would be happy to tell you in private or in this blog, if you wish).
Given my background, I'd be happy to work on Jeeg or Casshern. To be completely honest, what I can not assure 100% is continuous effort. If I see that the workload is too much for me, I'll be ready to step down.
I read that there are many volunteers for Italian translations, though, so I don't really this is a problem. Plus, maybe we can proofread each other's work, which is always good.

I already have translated quite lot of buddhist teachings from english to french (I'll link my site if you contact me by email so you'll see), and I'm very serious doing this, I'm quite a perfectionnist. ReplyDeleteHi, i´m from Spain, but pretty bilingual since childhood in the sense that i´m personally more comfortable with english than with spanish in my personal likeness(i don't have to bother with subs for anything spoken in english, regardless of accent). Musician by trade, screenwriter and animator at heart. I've had a love for anime since ever rediscovering the good times with grendizer of my kid days some 10 years ago. Amongst other things, i had to retranslate from Japanese the Revival of Evangelion cut of the Eva films for a 2 months film program i myself designed and presented at Las Palmas University(ULPGC), because its rather awful that 99% of the official releases here are more not-translations than proper traductions. Said that, it would be nothing more than a great pleasure to lend a hand in any spanish translation that isn´t already picked up for anything Go Nagai, Tezuka, Ishikawa, Yokoyama, sentai, robot, even shoujo or magical girl, ´cause there isn't enough of this stuff here, you know.

ReplyDeleteIf you plan to start some rare live action series, I would be happy to help for Italian. Stuff like Shoujo Commando Izumi, Eko Eko Azarak, Zombieya Reiko, etc. I haven't got many time, but if you provide English srt with timings, it would be quite easy to move to Italian. I would also take it as a listening exercise for Japanese, which I just started to learn.
