Discotek licenses Cutie Honey

Back in the 1990s when I first started subtitling, I figured that the kind of shows I wanted to work on were not the sort of thing that would ever be licensed for official release. You can imagine what a surprise it was to me when I had to withdraw my subtitled versions of Lupin the Third (second series), GoLion and Dairugger XV.

Well, now Cutie Honey has been licensed by Discotek Media, so I've deleted all of my torrents and DDLs. I certainly plan on buying the series from them when it is released. This is actually a really exciting announcement for me, although obviously it would have been nicer if they had done it a year earlier.

Other cool anime series that Discotek will be releasing on DVD include Mazinger Z and Captain Harlock. And they've already released a box set of the original Lupin the Third series from 1971. We truly live in a time of wonders...

  1. I'm just as surprised as you are about Cutey Honey '73 and Mazinger Z. I'll definitely be purchasing the box sets for those series once they are released by Discotek.

Who knows? This could be a sign that more anime from the past could be licensed as well. We can only hope...

  2. Discotek is my favorite. I brought all the Fist of The North Star DVDs and all Lupin related stuff. They truly know how to please the hardcore 70s-90s anime fans.

  3. Discotek has been releasing some really fantastic stuff lately; it's quite exciting to see just what they'll put out next. I've got all of your Cutie Honey releases, and while I'll be buying the Discotek set when it comes out, I'd really like to thank you for spending all of that time and translating it, regardless; you did a fantastic job!

  4. I came here today to finally download the Cutie Honey '73 torrents I've been putting for for a long time, only to discover that it has been licensed!! I'M SO EXCITED!! I know nothing about Discotek as a company, but if they're willing to release Cutie Honey, I'm totally there!

Thanks for sharing the news! And thanks for all your hard work bringing attention to a bunch of series that would probably otherwise go unnoticed.

  5. Living in a time of wonders, indeed!
I never thought I'd see this day.

Discotek has done the honorable job of stepping up to the old school plate and catering to the niche fans (almost as good as U.S. Manga Corps).
    I'm excited too.

But know that all of your hard work has not been in vain, Nanto! You've helped keep the flame burning for all of us hopeful old school fans until the R1 DVD industry takes notice of this (still viable) niche market. Kudos to you!

  6. 2 big names here with this set of announcements, and they have been getting a number of other big titles recently like Captain Harlock. On top of that, they aren't alone with these older releases, with Rose of Versailles being picked up not that long ago either, which actually seems like it will do quite well with a more general audience. The viability of old school releases seems to have greatly improved over the past few years, as more people begin to find these older series.

Now to just pray that the obstacles preventing it's release are overcome to allow the holy grail of older releases to someday be licensed, known as Legend of the Galactic Heroes.

  7. D-T has been increasingly become the anime company for fans of anything other than recent usual generic shows, and thank god for it since even AnimEigo has not touched a new anime title in years.

  8. These recent Diskotek news are intriguing for me.
Is the US Old School market living such a good days that can make such a title like Cutey Honey viable to the market? Somehow in my eyes I imagine it a flop, but looking at their catalogue and seeing that are still around and announcing new things prove me wrong. Here's hope for a better future for Old School Anime.

Cheers Nanto, and thanks for everything.
